It sounds logical. It's been repeated so often that most people treat it as settled fact. Nutritionists mention it. Fitness influencers mention it. Your aunt mentions it over Thanksgiving dinner.

The dehydration story isn't pure fiction. It's based on a real pharmacological property of caffeine: at high doses, it does act as a mild diuretic, meaning it can increase urine output. Studies going back to the mid-20th century confirmed this effect, and the conclusion — caffeine equals dehydration — got locked into public health messaging and never quite got unlocked.
The issue is that those early studies were often conducted on people who hadn't consumed caffeine in a while. When you give a meaningful dose of caffeine to someone who doesn't regularly drink coffee, yes, their kidneys respond. The diuretic effect is real under those specific conditions.

A few reasons. First, the original concern wasn't wrong in every context — it was just overgeneralized. High-dose caffeine in someone who rarely consumes it does have a measurable diuretic effect. That nuance got flattened into a blanket rule.
Second, the wellness industry has a complicated relationship with coffee. For years, coffee was treated with suspicion — too much acidity, too much caffeine, bad for your adrenals, bad for your cortisol. The dehydration angle fit neatly into a broader narrative that positioned coffee as something you needed to manage and compensate for. That narrative sold a lot of water bottles, electrolyte packets, and morning routine supplements.
Third, there's something intuitively satisfying about the idea that a stimulant comes with a cost. It fits the mental model that if something feels good or energizing, your body must be paying for it somewhere. The dehydration story confirms that suspicion, even when the data doesn't.
What's Actually Worth Paying Attention To
None of this means you should stop drinking water or assume caffeine is irrelevant to your physiology. A few things are still worth knowing.
If you're not a regular coffee drinker and you suddenly consume a large amount of caffeine — say, before a long run or a big exam — the diuretic effect can be more noticeable. Context matters.
Very high caffeine intake, well above what most people consume in a normal day, can push the diuretic effect into more meaningful territory. We're talking about amounts that would make most people jittery and uncomfortable long before dehydration became a concern.
And if you're exercising in heat and relying primarily on coffee for fluid intake, that's a different situation than sitting at a desk with a normal cup of drip.
But for the average person drinking one to three cups of coffee a day? The evidence is pretty clear that you're not depleting yourself. You don't need to compensate with an extra glass of water for every cup. Your kidneys are handling it.
