We Spent Decades Killing Household Germs — Now Researchers Think That Might Be Why Allergy Rates Keep Climbing

Somewhere in the last few decades, American homes got very, very clean. Antibacterial soaps became standard. Hand sanitizer appeared in every public space. Surfaces got wiped down with disinfectant wipes. Parents kept toddlers away from dirt, pets, and anything that looked like it had been on the floor.

All of this made intuitive sense. Germs cause illness. Less exposure to germs means less illness. The logic was clean and simple.

Except something unexpected started showing up in the data.

Allergy rates in the United States have climbed sharply over roughly the same period that household hygiene intensified. Peanut allergies. Hay fever. Eczema. Asthma. Conditions that were relatively uncommon in earlier generations are now treated as routine childhood experiences. And a growing body of research suggests these two trends — cleaner homes and more allergies — may not be a coincidence.

What the Hygiene Hypothesis Actually Says

The hygiene hypothesis was first formally proposed by British epidemiologist David Strachan in 1989, after he noticed that children with more older siblings had lower rates of hay fever. His theory: early exposure to infections and microbes — the kind you'd encounter more often in a busy household — seemed to offer some protection against allergic disease.

The idea has been refined and expanded significantly since then. Researchers today tend to frame it around the microbiome and immune system development rather than infections specifically. The core argument goes like this: the human immune system evolved over hundreds of thousands of years in environments filled with bacteria, parasites, fungi, and other microorganisms. Exposure to these things during early childhood appears to be part of how the immune system learns to calibrate itself — distinguishing genuine threats from harmless substances.

When that early microbial exposure is dramatically reduced, some researchers believe the immune system doesn't develop the same regulatory tolerance. It stays in a kind of heightened readiness, and without real threats to respond to, it starts reacting to things that aren't actually dangerous — pollen, peanut proteins, pet dander, dust mites.

In other words: the immune system isn't broken. It may simply be undertrained.

The Evidence That Keeps Showing Up

Some of the most striking data comes from comparisons between populations with different levels of environmental exposure.

Children raised on farms — particularly those with regular contact with farm animals and unpasteurized dairy — consistently show lower rates of asthma and allergies in multiple studies across different countries. The Amish, who maintain traditional farming practices, have significantly lower allergy and asthma rates than the genetically similar Hutterites, who use more modern, mechanized farming methods with less direct animal contact. Researchers examining dust samples from Amish homes found far greater microbial diversity than in Hutterite homes — and believe that difference is doing meaningful immune work.

Studies of children in daycare settings — where germ exposure is notoriously high — have found lower rates of certain allergic conditions compared to children raised in lower-exposure home environments. Early exposure to pets, particularly dogs, has been linked in several studies to reduced allergy risk, not increased risk as many parents assume.

None of this means that sanitation is bad or that cleanliness causes allergies in a direct, one-to-one way. The relationship is more complicated than that. But the pattern across studies is consistent enough that immunologists take it seriously.

The Antibacterial Product Problem

One specific concern that's gotten more attention in recent years is the widespread use of antibacterial soaps and household cleaners. Products containing triclosan and similar compounds don't just kill pathogens — they kill a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including many that appear to play a role in healthy immune development.

The FDA actually moved to restrict triclosan in consumer soaps in 2016, citing both lack of proven effectiveness over regular soap and concerns about broader biological effects. But antibacterial marketing had already shaped consumer behavior for a generation. The assumption that antibacterial meant safer and cleaner became deeply embedded in how Americans shop for household products.

The irony is that plain soap and water works just as well for preventing the transmission of most common illnesses — which is what people actually want — while avoiding the collateral disruption to the microbial environment that broad-spectrum antibacterials create.

Modern Homes Are Also Just More Sealed

There's another factor that often gets overlooked in this conversation: modern American homes are dramatically more airtight than they were fifty years ago. Better insulation, sealed windows, and climate control systems mean that indoor air circulates less with the outside environment. This has real benefits for energy efficiency and comfort. But it also means less natural microbial diversity in the indoor environment.

Researchers studying indoor microbiomes have found that homes with more outdoor airflow — and especially homes with pets and plants — tend to harbor greater microbial variety. That variety, increasingly, looks like it might matter for the people living inside.

This Doesn't Mean You Should Stop Washing Your Hands

It's worth being clear about what the hygiene hypothesis is not saying. It is not an argument against washing hands, vaccinating children, or maintaining basic sanitation. The public health gains from those practices are enormous and well-documented. Infectious disease rates dropped dramatically across the twentieth century for good reasons.

The nuance is in the difference between targeted hygiene — washing hands before eating, cleaning surfaces that contact raw meat — and the broader cultural shift toward eliminating microbial exposure from everyday life. Letting a kid play in the dirt is not a public health risk. Having a dog in the house is not a hygiene failure. Spending time outside in natural environments is not something that needs to be sanitized away.

The immune system appears to be a use-it-or-learn-from-it system. It needs some contact with the microbial world to figure out what it should and shouldn't be alarmed by. Decades of increasingly aggressive sanitization may have quietly interfered with that process — and the climbing allergy statistics might be part of the result.
